Chinese man inserted a 20-centimetre eel into his rectum via his anus to “cure constipation”

A man in China inserted a 20-centimetre-long eel into his rectum from his anus in a desperate attempt to relieve his constipation. The eel managed to enter his abdomen, threatening his life. The shocking incident was reported from Xinghua, East China’s Jiangsu Province.

The man was inspired by a “folk remedy” which says that an eel can help bowel movement. However, instead of giving relief from constipation, the eel managed to move from his rectum, tear a hole through the colon and enter the abdomen.

He was initially “too shy to see the doctor”, however, after experiencing severe pain he decided to visit the hospital, The Global Times reported. The doctor had to conduct surgery to remove the eel.

This is not the first time that someone inserted an eel into their rectum to cure their constipation issues. Last year, another man, who was in his mid-50s, from South China’s Guangdong Province, suffered severe sepsis, septic shock and was unable to communicate coherently after he inserted a 15-inch eel into his rectum.

He was rushed to the Dongguan Huangjiang Hospital where a CT scan revealed that an Asian swamp eel had entered his abdominal cavity.

The doctors conducted an emergency surgery to remove the eel, which was intact but dead by the time it was extracted.

“It was only after surgery when we were enquiring after his medical history, that he told us he used the eel to cure his constipation. He inserted it up his anus into his rectum,” Dr Li had said.

The eel was still alive when it was removed from the man’s abdomen.

The doctor who conducted the operation said that the patient could have lost his life as the bacteria in the large intestine may cause hemolysis when it reaches the abdominal cavity.
